=An operating system is the most important type of system software that is responsible for the management of various activities of the computer. For e.g. Linux, Unix .

Ø  What are the basic functions of an operating system? List any four of them.
=The basic functions of an operating system are:
a.       Input/output management
b.      File and folder management
c.       Memory management
d.      Run application programmes

Ø  What is single user operating system? Write two examples.
=An operating system which is designed to operate by single user at a time is called single user operating system. For example: Dos,  Mac Os .

Ø  What are differences between GUI operating system and CUI operating system?

CUI
The CUI operating system is difficult to use and understand because user has to remember each command.
The GUI operating system is easy to use and understand because commands are graphically presented.
They do not support additional peripheral device and multimedia.
They support extra devices and multimedia system.
They don't support networking and internet.
 They support network and internet fully.
They are single user, single tasking operating system. e.g. DOS
They are multiuser, multitasking operating system . e.g. Ms Windows.

Ø  What is MS-DOS? Write its two features.
=MS- DOS is command user interface based operating system developed by Microsoft Corporation, USA. Its features are:-
a.       It is single user operating system.
b.      It supports both hard disk and floppy disk.
c.       It is CUI based operating system.
d.      It manages files and folders in hierarchical order.

Ø  What is booting? Mention the types of booting.
=The process of loading system files into  the computer's memory from disk is called booting. It's types are:
a.       Cold booting
b.      Warm booting

Ø  What are wildcards? Write some wildcard characters.
=The wildcard characters are the special symbols that can be used to represent any other character or characters in command statement. Some wildcard characters are  ( *  ,  *.* ,   ?,  : , /)

Ø  What is windows operating system? Write it's any two popular versions.
=Microsoft windows operating system is the popular Graphical User Interface based operating system developed by Microsoft Corporation USA. It's two popular versions are: Windows XP and Windows 7.
